The Liminal Space between Academia and Practice

A great piece perfectly describing my very own journeys between academia and practice and written in a well articulated format has been published now by frog design consultant Jon Kolko over at Core77. Well, this has been exactly the kind of piece I would have wanted to be written by myself for a while … the intellectual power of the blogosphere makes you humble ;-)

May I cite from his posting as follows:

“Teaching, then, wasn’t a method of telling students all about what I knew, because the only thing I knew about was Design process. Instead, teaching became a way for me to learn, and to structure theories, processes, methods and opinions about Design void of the “business” context. Teaching is a way to explore.”

Simply replace Design with Strategy and you’ll have what describes my now 10 years journey to the design management space:

“Teaching, …, wasn’t a method of telling students all about what I know, because the only thing I knew about was the Strategy Process. Instead, teaching became a way for me to learn, and to structure theories, processes, methods and opinions about Strategy void of the “design” context. Teaching is a way to explore.”

I remember vaguely a quote of Martin Luther that went something like this:

“If you want to learn something, find 25 people to teach the subject to.”

That notion came to mind as I read your post.

    Keep creating…a place to learn,
