Even though we’ve never met in person I seem to like Lucy Kimbell over at the “Design leads us where exactly” blog.
On Monday this on week Lucy posted a nice piece on her perception of the lack of intersections at an upcoming conference called “Intersections 07” to be held in October this year:
“Similarly, I have some idea what Tim Brown of IDEO might cover in his presentation on design thinking - a vision of the world in which business people (should) value designers. Despite some stars (like IDEO) and some promoters of this idea (like Business Week), mostly they don’t. Again, I would prefer to hear a dialogue between Tim Brown and some of the management academics who offer a more theoretical version of this story (Boland & Collopy, Roger Martin, Jeanne Liedtka)- and even better, some who don’t buy into it.”
Accordingly I fear that there are not too many non-design folks out there who are willing (or able) to discuss the topic beyond aesthetic.
And finally: Why does design (in so many cases) only work in managers’ minds (mostly male ;-) when it comes to cars?

On what do you base your fear that there are ‘not too many non-design folks out there who are willing (or able) to discuss the topic beyond aesthetic’? Among the speakers and session chairs, other than myself, are Jeremy Myerson, Gillian Crampton-Smith, James Woudhuysen, Austin Williams, Vicky Richardson, John Thackara, and Allan Chochinov who all write about design beyond aesthetics, and have pioneered much new thinking around design. While some of Lucy Kimbell’s comments are fair, she wants to see a conference that fits another brief than the one that informed InterSections. I wish someone would create that conference as well.
