it’s quite funny since every time you mention the words “design management” most people are looking quite excited at you and within a few minutes a lively discussion has almost started.
the tipping point comes when you discuss how to become a “design manager” or which kind of companies are hiring “design managers” these days.
at our first design management roundtable discussion at the KISD in cologne in 2002, Peter Boelsma, design professional recruiter from the netherlands, summarised this discussion as follows:
“Don’t look for vacancies saying: ‘We’re looking for you, the new Design Manager of our company’. What he rather says is that you will grow into this position and that the profession has a broad scope of titles and appearances. >> just listen to an audio fragment from the symposium (approx. 3 MB, MP3 file).
interestingly I’ve recently talked about the state of the design management profession with Frans Joziasse, director of PARK, a consultancy specialised in design research, design organisation & design strategy. while these terms define a pretty clear domain, PARK has been recently asked by one of their clients to support them with finding the new right minded ‘Head of Product Design’ with a ‘design management spirit’.
so for those of you who are interested in the position, I’m happy to place some closer information on this here in my blog. since I assume that this position will be highly relevant for german native speakers I’ll post this in german so far. however non-native speakers are welcome to apply as well!
