one of the core competencies of design managers is their comprehensive view and understanding of organizations which is not only limited to focusing on the contribution of design to corporate success (this is at least what we wish design managers to be like ;-).

however if design managers ever want to get closer to the top positions and their respective leaders no matter if from inside a company or as an external advisor it is crucial to understand why leaders succeed and more importantly why they fail!

al vogl author for “across the board” and editor of “understanding failure” (across the board july/august 2003) was directed to these questions by a recently published book:

“Why CEOs Fail: The 11 Behaviors That Can Derail Your Climb to the Top-and How to Manage Them (Jossey-Bass) by David L. Dotlich and Peter C. Cairo.”
